Protecting Victoria Falls: Meet Revolve Eco

How a circular waste system built on Black Soldier Fly technology could save elephants, restore soil, and create green livelihoods

Victoria Falls is choking on its own waste

Elephants are dying. Tourists are shocked. And local communities are paying the price.

In one of the world's most iconic natural destinations, unmanaged organic waste at local dumpsites has triggered a tragic pattern: wildlife, especially elephants, are ingesting plastic while scavenging for food scraps. The results are devastating—internal injuries, starvation, aggression, and fatal encounters with people. What should be a beacon of ecological harmony has become a symbol of avoidable crisis.

But what if waste was the solution, not the problem?

Introducing Revolve Eco

Revolve Eco is a new regenerative waste-to-value initiative in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Our goal is simple: build a circular system for managing organic waste that restores ecosystems, prevents wildlife conflict, and supports sustainable livelihoods.

The model is built on a proven solution: Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae. These remarkable insects consume organic waste and transform it into:

  • High-quality protein for animal feed

  • Frass, a nutrient-rich soil amendment that restores fertility

From day one, we aim to recover 2–3 tonnes of organic waste daily, scaling up to 13 tonnes/day as the town grows. By year 10, we aim to divert over 3,500 tonnes of waste annually, producing:

  • 600 tonnes/year of insect protein

  • 1,200 tonnes/year of frass

What’s Driving This Project?

  • Human-wildlife conflict: Elephants are dying from plastic ingestion. People are at risk. Organic waste is the link.

  • Youth unemployment: This system will create over 60 jobs (direct + indirect), with a strong focus on women.

  • Soil degradation: Frass is an organic alternative to chemical fertilizers.

  • Tourism sustainability: Victoria Falls must walk its eco-talk. This is a step forward.

We’re proud to partner with:

  • Eclose, global BSF specialists with roots in academic R&D

  • The Farm, a sustainable agriculture project in Victoria Falls

  • Ele Collection and Pristine Victoria Falls Society, two waste-focused community champions

Circular, Smart, Local

Our model is:

  • Low tech and ideal for community ownership

  • Token-based: locals earn "Green Tokens" by contributing sorted organic waste

  • Socially equitable: a minimum of 50% of staff will be women

  • Educational: we’re building curriculum programs with local schools

Frass and protein will be shared between contributors and sold to support operations, creating a self-sustaining, locally beneficial cycle.

What’s Next?

We’re entering the fundraising stage and actively seeking support from:

  • Climate and conservation donors

  • Municipal partners

  • Hospitality and tourism companies

  • Investors interested in circular economy models in Africa

Total project cost: $268,000

Let’s Redefine What’s Possible in Conservation Cities

Revolve Eco isn’t just about waste. It’s about dignity, biodiversity, and showing that life inside protected areas doesn’t have to mean compromise. We’re excited to build this model in Victoria Falls—and then take it everywhere it’s needed.
